Summer Reading Ideas: Color Our World 2025

I've been thinking about some special events I can do this summer that either fit the color theme or sound like fun for me and the guests. This year I am in main contact for most of our museum events so I can't create every event I would like to. If you don't know, many libraries work with local organizations and museums. This can happen all year long but the summertime is our busy season so we try to fill it with fun things for everyone to do.

This is a list of my ideas both events and passive! Feel free to take any of these to make your own.

Rock Painting

We have a Kindness Rock Garden at the front of our library that I was able to get set up last year. I want to have a painting event where I provide rocks, paint, paint pens, and brushes.

Passive Art Puzzle
I found these blank puzzle pieces on Amazon and would love to have guests color a piece and add them to the puzzle. I want to use a few pieces to write something like "Color Our Puzzle".

Snail Mail
Decorate and send a postcard to a friend or family member! I want to ask guests to bring their address and the address of who they want to send the letter. They can use the library address if they'd like to send a librarian a letter. My library is close to a post office so, I would like to read a picture book about mail, decorate the letters, then walk over to the post office to mail them that day. I found some stamps and blank postcards on Amazon.

Sock Puppets
I loved my sock puppet that my mom made me as a kid. They can be quite colorful if you make them have crazy hair! They only need a few cheap items to be created and many don't need to be sewn. If the kids want, they can put on a puppet show for the others at the end of the event.

Kid Librarian
I would like to invite a few kids over the summer to make their own book displays in our children's area. This will give them a sense of ownership as well as some responsibility. I have made a paper form to fill out with their contact information along with other guidelines. This is still a work in progress and it's going great so far! I can't wait to test it out.
