Review: The Troop by Nick Cutter

 


I read this book back in October of last year, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I’ve talked about it multiple times, and I still feel like I need to talk about it even more, so here we are!

Originally published on February 25, 2014, this novel blends horror, thriller, and science fiction. There are many elements at play, and I think that each element makes the story better. This is a story about a boy scout troop in Canada that is going on its annual camping trip to a remote island. They settle in the same cabin they use every year. The only thing that's different is that a man shows unexpectedly who is shockingly thin and voraciously hungry. He carries something with him that is far more dangerous than any weapon.

I found this book both disturbing and fascinating as everything started to come together. Every character gets a moment to shine in their own way. Their thoughts and motives intertwine with the body horror that threatens to consume them all. This was a 6-star read for me, and I’m still thinking about it months later.

Scavenger Hunts

I have recently made all of my scavenger hunts for one year and wanted to share them in case anyone needs ideas! I started doing these in April. They were so popular that I made two for the summer months since kids were coming in more often. If you are planning to start your own hunt, I'll describe what I do now after a few months of trial and error. I make all the designs in Canva. Summer Reading Ideas: Color Our World 2025

I've been thinking about some special events I can do this summer that either fit the color theme or sound like fun for me and the guests. This year I am in main contact for most of our museum events so I can't create every event I would like to. If you don't know, many libraries work with local organizations and museums. This can happen all year long but the summertime is our busy season so we try to fill it with fun things for everyone to do.  This is a list of my ideas both events and passive! Feel free to take any of these to make your own.  Rock Painting We have a Kindness Rock Garden at the front of our library that I was able to get set up last year . I want to have a painting event where I provide rocks, paint, paint pens, and brushes. Passive Art Puzzle I found these blank puzzle pieces on Amazon and would love to have guests color a piece and add them to the puzzle. Dog Man Day

What is Dog Man Day? Dog Man fans of all ages are invited to join the supa epic event with activities and games. We'll play Dog Man bingo, a personality test, assess your sniffers, and more. Dog Man is Go! That don't make no sense! But we like it! I first came across this idea from a post from Ontarian Librarian . She was able to get a Comic Creator booklet and some other cool items to make her event a hit. I took a few of her ideas and made them my own but she is the reason I made this event. I learned about Dog Man Day after Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea came out. Scholastic made an event kit with lots of activities. I read through them and picked the ones I knew I could do. With the power of these two sources, I was able to put together a plan for my own event. What I did to prepare I would say that reading at least one Dog Man book is a requirement for running this program.
